Ted Bigelow was born and raised just outside of Boston, and freely confesses to being a lifelong Red Sox fan. He is married to Deena and together they have four children, Katie, Karryn, Daniel, and David.
While attending Boston College in 1980 the Lord opened Ted’s heart to understand the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. He describes the time as follows:
I was around a group of Christian baseball players who were so remarkably different than anybody I had ever known. I was attracted to their warmth and humor and wanted to know what made them different. I told them I was a Christian, but honestly, I had never even read a verse from the Bible in my entire life! I had no knowledge of who Jesus was, or what had happened on the cross. The only thing that guided my life was living for my own pleasures.
One evening several of these baseball players shared their own testimonies of God’s salvation and the marvelous truth of Christ’s death on the cross for sin. It all made immediate sense. I never doubted that I was a sinner (just ask those I grew up with). And when I was told about Jesus’ death and resurrection, I never really doubted that Jesus had taken away my sin. I just knew I wanted a full pardon and the comfort of knowing the Lord like my friends had. I felt like that man with a burden of rocks on his back, and I just knew the Lord could remove that shame and burden. That evening I prayed for God to forgive me and almost immediately developed a desire to know more about Him.
I soon gave up my ideas of playing professional baseball (fat chance anyway) and began learning all about the Lord. The more I learned, the more I wanted to learn. Now, as a pastor since 1997, I am privileged to spend my time learning about Him and His perfect Word, and applying His Word to other’s lives. My pleasures have changed a lot over the years as the Lord replaced my desires with His desires. I would definitely rather be a nothing and have Christ, than have everything but not Him.
Through the 1980s Ted ministered in evangelism and discipleship. During the 1990s he ministered in churches, rescue missions and prisons. He is a graduate of The Master’s Seminary where he earned a Masters in Divinity and Master’s in Theology, graduating with summa cum laude honors in both. He also served as student body president in his senior year. In 1997 Ted was ordained to the public ministry of the gospel of Jesus Christ by unanimous vote of the Elders of Grace Community Church and has been pastoring Calvary Church since 1999.
